Support of Star Island

Conferences

The Association has provided many conferences (All Star, International Affairs, Life on a Star and Young Adults) with start-up financial support. We also grant scholarships and promotional funding for various conference groups. For further information on grants please refer to the Conference Grants Programs.

Buildings and Maintenance Projects

The Association has helped improve the Rutledge Marine Laboratory, the Dememt Infirmary, Baker housing unit, Pel Hall and the Children’s Barn – to name a few. In 2005 the ISA provided major funding for the extensive Chapel renovation. The Association also funds maintenance projects like the resurfacing of the tennis courts and the installation of fire protection equipment.

Recent Donations and Grants

As most conferees know, the well house has been rebuilt, painted and stands waiting to greet Shoalers as they come up the walkway to the lobby. Thanks to Dick Case, Tom Mansfield and the other volunteers who donated time and energy to reconstruct the island landmark, which was funded in full by ISA dollars. The reconstruction has sparked many discussions as to whether or not colors are correct for the roof and sides. We have been assured that the well house is authentic to the original size, shape and color. Curse all those conference photos!

The only differences in the present structure are the elbows anchoring the gazebo into the foundation. Dick Case declared that, “It will last long after I’m dead.” Well, we hope he is incorrect. As they have proven, we can always build another well house. Dedicated volunteers, like Case are by far a more precious commodity.
